RUST, Brian. Jazz Records A-Z, 1897-1931. Middlesex, England: [Printed by Steve Lane (Musical and Publicity Services) from matrices cut by the author himself], (1961). Thick quarto, original post-bound full maroon leatherette.

Very Scarce first edition of Brian Rust’s classic jazz record discography, "the definitive guide to 78 rpm records,” which includes blues recordings not listed in later editions.

"Most fields of collecting have their standard reference books from which information on specific areas of interest can be gleaned… In the world of jazz record collecting, the definitive guide to 78 rpm records is Jazz Records 1897-1931, a veritable ‘bible’ of information on jazz recordings made during the first half of the 20th century… Included are recordings made by commercial dance bands and singers, with the proviso that they contained improvised solos-‘hot’ dance music, in other words. Ragtime recordings were also listed” (Nick Dellow). Its compiler, Brian Rust, tracks the origins of jazz recordings to the Original Dixieland Jazz Band, whose "Livery Stable Blues,” flip-sided with "Dixie Jass Band One Step,” was the first jazz record ever released-on February 26, 1917-for the Victor Talking Machine Company. In compiling Jazz Records Rust plowed through thousands of the old ledgers of recording companies. With an introduction containing list of collectors and contributors who helped with the work, an index of abbreviations and general notes.
